Retired UVa Spanish professor C. Julian Bishko, left, 93, made a point of attending UVa's graduation and Final Exercises to congratulate his cousin twice removed, Brandi L. Durkac, second from right. Bishko, who still goes to Alderman Library once a week to do research, became a mentor to Durkac, who majored in Spanish and economics. Standing with them are Spanish department chair David Gies, who said he also considered Bishko a mentor, and Brandi's mother, Lani, whose father was Bishko's first cousin. |

From excerpt on back: The Papers of George Washington in Alderman Library received a special visitor last week. Washington himself stopped by the office to peruse his papers.
Okay, we cannot tell a lie. It was not really the nation’s father, but historical interpreter James Renwick Manship, a member of Mount Vernon’s board of visitors, who was in town for Charlottesville’s annual Thanksgiving festival.
Washington issued his landmark Thanksgiving Proclamation, beginning the national holiday tradition, in 1789 at the urging of Congress.
Letters and documents written by Washington, as well as correspondence written to him, will eventually be published in approximately 90 volumes by The Papers of George Washington, a grant-funded project established at UVa in 1969 under the joint auspices of the University and the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association of the Union. Forty-four volumes are now finished. |

From excerpt: Queen Margrethe II of Denmark and her husband Prince Henrik (center) are joined on a tour of the Lawn by University President and Mrs. John T. Casteen III February 18, 1991 on the first day of the Danish royalty's state visit to the United States. Third-year student and University Guide Michael C. Smith led the tour. The Queen met with former Senator J. William Fulbright, for whom the Fulbright Scholar Program is named, to mark the 40th anniversary of Danish participation in the scholar exchanges. The royal party also attended a lecture in Alderman Library's McGregor Room on Roman archaeological excavations in Morgantina, Sicily, in which the Queen's grandfather was involved and which are now conducted by UVa. |
